181 years ago from February 23rd to March 6th, Texians at the Alamo Mission were totally defeated by the Mexican army. Texians [English speaking residents of the Mexican province of Texas] and some adventuresome Americans had been trying to break away from the Republic of Mexico to form their own republic, called Texas. This revolt, called the Texas Revolution, started in the fall of 1835 and ended in April of 1836.
The cruelty of the Mexican leader, Antonio López de Santa Anna, during the siege and defeat of The Alamo led to many Texians and Americans joining the revolt against Mexico until finally they were able to defeat the Mexican army and end the Revolution at the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21st that year. The famous war cry “Remember the Alamo!” was used during this battle to encourage the Texian Army in their fight against the Mexicans.
